Statement from County Executive McCoy on the 2020 State of the State Address

Post Date:01/28/2020 11:19 am
As elected officials, New Yorkers rightfully expect us to improve their daily lives and make our state a more affordable place to live and raise a family. Governor Cuomo’s State of the State Address puts forward a strong plan that can do both.

Guaranteed paid sick leave and reducing the price of prescriptions will ensure hardworking families have greater peace of mind. Additionally, investing in workforce development, cutting small business taxes and supporting our craft beverage industry will be critical to growing our economy and creating jobs. Albany County has in many ways been at the forefront of green initiatives and I applaud the Governor for his continued support of environmental protections.

Expanding Medication Assisted Treatment will get more of those who are addicted to opioids into recovery and ultimately will save lives; and we must invest as many resources possible for a complete count in this year’s Census. Furthermore, an equal rights amendment, eliminating the “pink tax” and legalizing gestational surrogacy will bring greater equity to women, the LGBTQ community and society as a whole.

To be sure, the Governor and the Legislature face the daunting task of closing the more than $6 billion budget deficit this year, but I am confident that they will be able to do so without sacrificing our shared commitments to taxpayers.
