Albany County Executive Mike Breslin was joined on June 2, 2011 by Town of Bethlehem Supervisor Sam Messina, Jill Knapp, executive director of the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy (MHLC) and Seth McKee, land conservation director of Scenic Hudson to open the first segment of the Albany County Rail Trail today with a ribbon cutting. |

| Albany County, the Town of Bethlehem and the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy (MHLC) have developed an intermunicipal agreement to open a 1.85 mile section of the Albany County Rail Trail to the public for limited non-motorized use. The agreement is subject to approval by the Bethlehem Town Board and County Legislature. |

The County purchased the nine-mile stretch of the old Delaware & Hudson Railway between the Port of Albany and Voorheesville for $700,000 from Canadian Pacific Railway with a 2003 grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) of $350,000. Scenic Hudson, a Poughkeepsie-based non-profit land conservation organization, donated the matching funds of $350,000 to complete the purchase. |

The proposed rail trail project will convert a nine-mile stretch of the old Delaware & Hudson Railroad between the Port of Albany and Voorheesville to a public recreational trail. Once completed, the Rail Trail would link municipalities along a safe and accessible pedestrian and bicycle route. The trail would allow the County to preserve open space in the community, link neighborhoods and promote physical fitness. |
