County Executive McCoy Appoints ACNH Executive Director

August 14, 2013

In the spirit of compromise and to address the serious financial drain that the Albany County Nursing Home has been placing on the county, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy has asked the legislature to approve the appointment of Larry Slatky as ACNH Executive Director and Administrator.  Slatky has over 40 years of long-term care experience having served as a health care administrator specializing in nursing home and hospital operations.

“Mr. Slatky has a great reputation and experience creating efficiencies and turning around health care facilities,” said McCoy.  “Chairman of the legislature Shawn Morse, Majority Leader Frank Commisso and I have had many discussions regarding Mr. Slatky’s ability to save money at the Albany County Nursing Home.  At a public presentation, Mr. Slatky indicated he could make changes within six months that would save $5 million a year. His appointment would mark the first step in an Executive and Legislative commitment to transition our nursing home to a private operator via a local development corporation.”

The County Executive has submitted the official Request for Legislative Action to the Chairman’s office to appoint Slatky to the position.  If approved, Slatky would start in early October.

“Albany County can’t continue to lose $1 million a month,” continued McCoy.  “I’m pleased we are moving forward on a solution that will protect our seniors, their caretakers and accept financial responsibility.  I applaud my colleagues in the legislature for working with my administration on a compromise that could do that.”

Based on 2012 preliminary independent audit results which are expected to be published by the end of the month, the Albany County Nursing Home shows an operating loss of well over $12 million.
