County Executive McCoy Expands Free AAU Programs

Announces Upcoming Summer & Fall Sports Start Dates

On the eve of summer, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today announced his expansion of the free Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) sports program with the first-time additions of flag football in Bethlehem and track & field in Voorheesville. These new programs come as the summer and fall start dates of already existing programs are announced, including flag football and lacrosse already in place in Green Island, Cohoes, Watervliet and Ravena; track & field in Cohoes; and baseball in Voorheesville, Watervliet and Ravena.

This first-of-its-kind partnership between the Albany County Department of Recreation, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office and the AAU covers the cost of not only expensive equipment, but insurance as well, allowing every child in Albany County the opportunity to enjoy AAU-sanctioned sports.

“Despite it being a $17 billion industry in this country, the rising costs of youth sports are sadly making them out of reach for more and more of our hardworking families, depriving children of important benefits that often lead to greater success in life,” said County Executive McCoy. “In the age of cell phones and social media, we want to make sure our all of our youth are staying active and healthy, and having some fun with friends.”

While overall participation among kids in youth teams is in decline, most of that decrease can be attributed to participation rates among children from lower income families. From 2011 to 2017, participation in programs like expensive travel leagues for families with incomes above $100,000 rose from 66% to 69%. For families who make below $25,000 over that same time of period, participation dropped from 42% to 34%.

Other sports offered throughout the year include karate, basketball ice-skating and ice hockey. The full list of summer and fall program start dates, times and locations announced today can be found at the link below:
