Albany County to Host 22nd Annual Child Safety Seat Checkup Event

Posted: Monday, June 17, 2019 11:32 AM

Child safety seats can save lives but only if they are installed properly. The Albany County Traffic Safety Program has been hosting events for over 20 years to help parents and caregivers protect kids in motor vehicles. Improperly installed child safety seats can lead to serious injury or death for young kids who may be in vehicles involved in traffic accidents. About 200 seats have been replaced due to them being recalled, too old, damaged, missing parts, or for being inappropriate for the child. Making sure that these seats are put in correctly can reduce the risks of injury to any child in a moving vehicle.

“Information is key to making sure that we keep kids safe by installing car safety seats correctly, and we know we have saved lives over the last 20 years because of these events,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy. “Since 1998, the Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians have checked almost 2,500 child safety seats and found that only 91 of the seats – had been installed correctly; that’s less than four percent! We want to make sure your children are protected when you’re bringing them to school, daycare, or wherever you need to go.”

The free seat checkup event will be held on June 28 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Colonie Center Parking Lot near Whole Foods.

The event is sponsored by:

Albany County DPW – Traffic Safety Education Program
Capital Region SAFE Kids Coalition
NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee
