Honor A Veteran

Douglas T. Boyd, US Navy

1920 - 1998

The Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated the life of Douglas T. Boyd at a ceremony held October 1, 2012. A video of this ceremony is available.

Douglas T. Boyd was born in Gloversville, New York on August 11, 1920. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and became Seaman First Class USNR. Doug served on the USS Intrepid and was honorably discharged in 1946 with a note he was entitled to several ribbons and awards which he never pursued.

After his service, Doug worked for a short time as a Portable Equipment Engineer in Western New York then he and his wife, Pat, moved back to Albany where he returned to house-painting. Doug and Pat were married over 50 years and enjoyed fishing together. After Doug’s death. Pat requested the medals Doug had never sought. This year, she received the following medals on his behalf: Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, American Campaign Medal and Philippine Liberation Medal. The Department of Navy is investigating whether he should be awarded the Purple Heart.

The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of every month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
