Honor A Veteran
George A. LaMora, Sr. , US NavyAlbany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated veteran George A. LaMora, Sr. at a ceremony on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the North Albany Legion Post 1610 in Albany. George A. LaMora, Sr. was born in 1926 in Cohoes. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and became a Seaman Recruit. LaMora received extensive training to serve aboard two Landing Ship Tanks in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign. While the LSTs were at sea, LaMora was positioned as a Gunner's Mate and during Amphibious Operations he assumed the duties of a Coxswain. LaMora was honorably discharged in 1946 and for his excellent service was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with three Bonze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the New York State Medal for Merit with one Silver Shield. Upon his return home to Cohoes, LaMora married Elaine Miron and together they raised their three children. LaMora worked for the Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc. and was a dedicated member of the United Paper Workers International Union Local 390. After retiring in 1979, LaMora moved to Florida but frequently returned to the Capital District. The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is typically held every first Monday of the month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
