Honor A Veteran
Donald Bell, US Marine CorpsAlbany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated veteran Donald Bell at a ceremony on Monday, November 2, 2009. Bell was born on April 22, 1930 in Troy. At only 16, Bell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and participated in the occupation of China from 1946-1947. Upon returning home, Bell worked for the Ford Motor Company in Green Island for 30 years. Bell also maintained a great commitment to his military service as a civilian, holding positions such as the Commander of the Lieutenant Herman Silverstein American Legion Post No. 218, Commander of the Albany County American Legion and Commander of the Captain William Dale O'Brien Marine Corp Detachment. He was also a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the Lansingburgh Veterans Organization. For over 10 years, Don volunteered his time and energy to chair the Honor-A-Veteran Committee. The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of each month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
