Honor A Veteran
Leigh J. Garhartt, US NavyAlbany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated veteran Leigh J. Garhartt at a ceremony on September 8, 2009. Leigh J. Garhartt was born on June 30, 1923 in Albany. At the age of 19, Leigh joined the US Navy where he served as Seaman 1st class during WW II and provided security aboard merchant marine ships in the European Theatre. For his outstanding service, Leigh was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. After WWII ended in victory, Leigh was honorably discharged and returned home to work for 30 years at Tobin Packing Co., retiring as a maintenance foreman. He had also worked at Atlas Copco in Voorheesville and later at Hannaford Supermarket Pharmacy. Leigh was also very involved with his family and community and dedicated much time to helping others. He was very active in Colonie Little League and Babe Ruth as well as the Colonie Police Auxiliary. The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of each month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
