Honor A Veteran

Peter Letko, US Army

Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated veteran Peter Letko at a ceremony on July 6, 2009.

Peter Letko was born in Maplewood on January 19, 1921. He served in the United States Army for four years during World War II as Sergeant of the Company L 398th Infantry 100 Division and saw combat throughout Europe.

Peter was awarded a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Purple Heart. Upon his returning from war, Peter remained active in area veterans' organizations and Albany County 4-H and worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 30 years.

The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of each month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
