Honor A VeteranAlbany County Honors World War II Veteran William CareyAlbany County Executive Mike Breslin and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated World War II veteran William Carey in a ceremony held on Monday, May 2, 2005, at the North Albany American Legion Post at 35 North First Street in Albany. Carey, a lifelong resident of Albany, graduated from Public School 20 and Christian Brothers Academy. During the late 1930’s, he played semi-pro football for Sacred Heart. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1941, serving during World War II with the First Marine Raider Battalion, known as Edsons Raiders, at Guadal Canal. He received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Carey was a member of the Local 12 Ironworkers’ Union for over 45 years and served on the executive board. An active member of the community, he served as manager of North Albany Little League for many years and was a longtime member and past commander of the North Albany American Legion Post. He was also a longtime member of the Albany Elks Lodge, the Albany Ancient Order of Hibernian, the North Albany Limericks and Sacred Heart Church.
