Honor A VeteranCounty Honors World War II Veteran William MahoneyAlbany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Michael McNulty and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated World War II veteran William T. Mahoney at a ceremony on January 2, 2007, in Albany. Mahoney was born in Albany on September 7, 1927. He graduated from Vincentian Institute, Albany Business College and Hudson Valley Community College. He served during World War II in the United States Navy with the Seabees from 1944 to 1946 and later served with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves and the U.S. Air Force Reserves. In 1949, Mahoney joined the Albany Police Department, where he served as a detective until 1966 when he joined the Albany County Sheriff's Department. While working for the Sheriff, he attended the FBI National Academy and was promoted to Under Sheriff in 1977, serving in that position until his retirement in 1993. He was an active member of the community, serving as past Albany County commander and past post commander of the VFW in Altamont, past president of the Altamont Businessman's Association and a member of the Helderberg American Legion Post, the B.P.O.E. and the Altamont Fair Board.
