About Joe Pollicino

Joseph Pollicino was born the second of four children to John and Fedora Pollicino on July 28, 1947.

Joe, his brother Neil and sisters Barbara and Clara grew up in the Grand Street section of Albany and attended Saint Anthony's Roman Catholic Church. Shortly after he graduated from Albany High School in 1966, Joe along with classmates Ron Best, Al Diacetis, Al Istorico, Bill Sherwood and Ralph all enlisted in the Marine Corps.

Joe's service included a tour of duty in Vietnam with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5 Marines, and 1st Division. On July 14, 1967 he was wounded in action while on patrol in 1 Corps outside Danang.

After his honorable discharge, Joe found employment with the Grand Union Markets from 1969 to 1973, ultimately serving as assistant manager at various locations in the Capital District.

Joe began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1973, a career that lasted until his retirement in 2004. As letter carrier he was also appointed by the district manager to the Leadership and Veterans Committee, the District Delivery Team and as the District Coordinator for Delivery Point Sequencing.

For driving more than a million miles without an accident, the Postal Service presented Joe the "Million Mile Award."

During his career with the Postal Service, Joe was an active member and officer with the National Association of Letter Carriers [NALC], serving in that union as its local chapter treasurer, vice president, executive vice president, and ultimately as its president from 1999 to 2004. He also served on the NALC state executive board from 1995-2005 and still serves as its Mutual Benefits Association representative.

Joe has a long and illustrious career as a veterans' advocate. He is a founding member, life member and the current president of Tri County Vietnam Era Veterans, having previously served as Council president for thirteen terms. Joe is also a life member of the 1st Marine Division Association, the Marine Corps League's CAPT. Wm. Dale O'Brien Detachment "Marine of the year" in 1999, Veterans' of Foreign Wars Post 8444, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Disable American veterans, Chapter 10.

Joe is also a member of the American Legion Post 1019, is on the Stratton VA Medical Center's Vet Care board, chairs the Albany County Joint Veterans Committee, served on the NYS Vietnam Memorial and Albany New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial committees, and was a member of the Shaker Road (Loudonville} Fire Department. In October 2005, Albany County Executive Michael G. Breslin appointed Joe as Director of the Albany County Veterans Service Bureau.

Joe has been married to the former Joyce Simons for 37 years. They have two sons, Bobby, who with his wife Lauren, lives in Maryland, and Joe, who with his wife Lisa and their 3 children Juliana, Justin and Jenna lives locally.
