Brownfields Redevelopment and Environmental Justice

Environmental justice is an important component of the County's Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilot.

The County's goal and the goal of the environmental justice movement is to promote awareness and public dialogue so communities can be players in the environmental cleanup and development process.

As urban communities become aware of the negative impacts of abandoned industrial sites, brownfield redevelopment offers these communities chances to reverse patterns of neglect.

No community should be subject to a disproportionate amount of environmental hazards, such as toxic emissions or excessive noise from factories, airports, highways and other facilities.

The County's site plans will reflect the community's opinion on how redevelopment efforts will affect county residents.

The goal of this program is to give people who are impacted the most by future land uses the chance to reach a consensus on how those plans will affect their community.
