Through the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program ("SAFER"), 12 volunteer fire departments in Berne and Westerlo will receive $429,000 over the next two years. Nearly half of that will go to a recuit and retention program with two part-time coordinators marketing and bringing in new members. The rest will go toward fire gear, pagers, and physicals for the firefighters.
