Prescription Discount Card Is Available Free for County Residents

Program Provides Discounts Up to 20% on Brand Name Drugs, Up to 70% on Generic

County Executive Mike Breslin and the members of the Albany County Legislature have announced the Albany County Prescription Discount Card, which will be provided free of charge to all Albany County residents through a partnership with ProAct, Inc., a Pharmacy Benefit Management Company.

The cards will provide users with discounts ranging from 10-20% on brand name drugs and 20-70% on generic drugs. While the program will be of most benefit to residents lacking prescription drug insurance and seniors paying out-of-pocket expenses for the Medicare Part D coverage gap, all Albany County residents, regardless of income or age, can use the card. The program is also no cost to taxpayers.

ProAct, at their expense, have mailed 128,404 discount cards to residents' homes. Discount cards are also available at participating pharmacies, the County Clerk's Office, the Department of Social Services and online at www.NYRxDiscountCard.com.

Using the card couldn't be easier. Simply present the card to the pharmacy along with a new prescription or refill to receive savings. The card can be used at any pharmacy in Albany County and at over 56,000 pharmacies nationwide. One discount card may be used for all family members and can also be used for discounts on pet medications. There are no enrollment forms, membership fees or income requirements.

Albany County is the 28th county in New York to offer the program. Through January 2010, over 942,379 prescriptions have been filled using this program with a savings of over $19.8 million to participating residents.
