Albany County Executive Mike Breslin and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee honored United States Army Air Corp Veteran Major Joseph A. Murphy. A ceremony was held on Monday, July 1, 2002 in the Cahill Room of the Albany County Office Building.
Joseph Murphy, of Albany’s North End, entered the Army Air Corp in January of 1942. He rose to the rank of Major during his service in the Southeast Asia Arena. He served as a navigator and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was awarded the Air Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Unit Citation for his service.
Joseph was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and Siena College. He was employed as an engineer for General Electric for more than 35 years. He was the general manager of GE Gas Turbine when he retired in 1982. He was a member of the North Albany American Legion Post #1610 and a communicant of the Church of St. Pius X.
