Former Congressman Michael McNulty and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated the life of veteran Anthony N. Valente at a ceremony on Monday, November 1, 2010 at the American Legion Joseph E. Zaloga Post 1520 in Albany.
Valente was born in 1929 in Albany, one of ten children of Nicola and Anna Valente. Four of his brothers had served in World War II.
Valente was a member of the Rescue Squad with the Albany Fire Department prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1949. He served as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island, S.C, and a Recruiting Officer in Flint, MI. He then volunteered to serve in Vietnam. As a Gunnery Sergeant with Company D, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, he became a Unit Leader. His battalion was in a defensive position on the outer perimeter of Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Province when he was killed by enemy gunfire on February 27, 1968.
The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is typically held every first Monday of the month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
