Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated the life of veteran John J. McNulty, Jr. at a ceremony on Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Legnard-Curtin Legion Post, Green Island, NY.
County Executive Breslin said, "Jack always answered the call to service–for his country, for his community and for his family. We will always remember his legacy and be inspired by his unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of others."
"Jack was a man who never turned down an opportunity to help, no matter who asked," said Congressman Paul Tonko. "He served his country in World War II with distinction and then returned to his hometown, dedicating his life to public service. We are all honored to pay tribute to Jack and his legacy."
McNulty, born in 1922, was a lifelong resident of Green Island. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Upon his return home, McNulty established McNulty Funeral Home in Green Island, which he owned and operated for more than 44 years. McNulty was a well-respected and dedicated public servant, holding a public office for seven decades. He was first elected Green Island Town Supervisor in 1949 and in 1957 became Mayor of the Village of Green Island. McNulty also served a four year term as Albany County Sheriff. In addition, he served as a member of the NYS Commission of Corrections, chairman of the Green Island Industrial Development Agency, vice chair of the Green Island Power Authority, chairman of the Green Island Democratic Committee and a member of the Albany County Democratic Committee.
McNulty was devoted to his family and he and his wife, Madelon, raised their five children, John, Mike, Mary, Ellen and William, who gave his life in Vietnam, to follow in their footsteps of civic duty and commitment to the social good. The professional example he set, along with his efforts on behalf of many community organizations and projects, made McNulty a household name in Green Island and the greater Capital District.
The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is typically held every first Monday of the month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
