Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated veteran Matthew Thompson at a ceremony held on Monday, February 1, 2010 in the Harold L. Joyce County Office Building in Albany.
Thompson was born on March 9, 1936 in Laurens, South Carolina, the eighth of 15 children. At an early age, the family relocated to Albany. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1958 as a Transportation Specialist.
Upon his return home, Thompson married his wife, Aroma, and worked for the NYS Department of Education for over 35 years. He was also the proprietor of Modern Barber Shop on Clinton Avenue and a black belt Judo instructor at the Albany YMCA and the Arbor Hill Community Center for more than 20 years. A faithful member of Refreshing Spring C.O.G.I.C., Thompson served in various capacities including the men's department and usher board.
The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held every first Monday of the month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
