Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee will commemorate veteran Ruben S. Gersowitz at a ceremony on Monday, October 5, 2009, in the Cahill Room of the Harold L. Joyce County Office Building at 112 State St. in Albany.

Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee will commemorate veteran Ruben S. Gersowitz at a ceremony on Monday, October 5, 2009, in the Cahill Room of the Harold L. Joyce County Office Building at 112 State St. in Albany.
Gersowitz was born on December 15, 1913 in Albany. In 1943, he left his job at Williams Department Store to join the United States Army as a Military Personnel Officer. His distinguished service earned him a Bronze Star Medal, a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal, a European Theater Ribbon with five battle stars, the American Theater Ribbon and a Victory Medal.
Upon his return home, Gersowitz became post commander of the Jewish War Veterans, Post 105. He was also very involved in local politics and served in numerous positions that were both elected and appointed, including: Albany Democratic ward leader of the 14th Ward, member of the NYS Democratic Committee, Judicial Nominating Committee, treasurer/coordinator for the annual Albany County Democratic Picnic Book and general manager of the Wellington Hotel. Gersowitz was also a dedicated member of the BPO Elks, Knights of Pythias, Albany Hebrew Tailors Association, Independent Benevolent Society and B'nai B'rith.
The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held every first Monday of the month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
