Robert G. Cooke, US Marine Corps

Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated Robert G. Cooke at a ceremony held on June 2, 2009.

Robert G. Cooke was born on May 12, 1920 in Albany. In April 1942, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served as a field radio operator. Robert fought in both World War II, with the 1st Division in the South Pacific, and in the Korean War with the 2nd Marine Division.

Robert saw combat in the South Pacific and received many medals and commendations including the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and numerous unit citations.

After his service, Robert worked as a superintendent of letter carriers for the United States Postal Service for 40 years. He also remained active in veterans' affairs and was instrumental in erecting a memorial to the First Marine Division at Saratoga National Cemetery.

The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of each month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
