Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated John P. Treffiletti at a ceremony held on March 2, 2009.

John P. Treffiletti was born on July 13, 1922 in Albany, where he was raised in the South End. In 1942, at the age of twenty, John entered the United States Army where he served in the 1224th Service Command Unit as a Medical Supply NCO. He served for more than three years and was awarded an American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

After being honorably discharged in 1946, John returned to the Capital Region where he worked as a salesman for J. Treffiletti and Sons Wholesale Grocers and operated his own chain of 15 Star Supermarkets.

John always remained active in his community, serving as a board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters and becoming involved with Trinity Institute, the Italian-American Community Center and the Albany Lodge of Elks.

The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of each month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
