Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Paul Tonko and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated Leonard E. Cummings at a ceremony held on February 2, 2009.

Leonard E. Cummings was born on August 17, 1947 in Schenectady. He was a three-sport varsity athlete at Mont Pleasant High School and upon graduation enrolled in Fulton Montgomery Community College.

Leonard joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 19 and served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division, where he participated in the 1968 Tet Offensive. He was a decorated Corporal, earning a Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Navy Unit Citation.

After four years of noble service, Leonard returned to the Capital Region. He worked as an Albany police officer for 12 years and then for 13 years at the Watervliet Arsenal before retiring in 1996.

The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held the first Monday of each month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
