Albany County Honors Army Nurse Frances M. Liberty

Albany County Executive Mike Breslin, Congressman Michael McNulty and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated Army Nurse Frances M. Liberty at a ceremony on May 7, 2007 in Albany.

Frances M. Liberty, also referred to as Lib, was born in Plattsburgh in 1923 and lived in Watervliet until her death in 2004. Lib enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1943 and her Military career spans nearly three decades. During World War II, she served in field hospitals in England, Africa and Italy. Lib transported wounded soldiers from mobile army surgical hospitals (MASH units) to station hospitals during the Korean War. She also served three tours of duty in Vietnam and was recognized as an expert on MASH units. Frances retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel in 1971 after 27 years of service to our country.

A true Capital Region Resident, Lib was a member of the Tri-County Council of Vietnam Veterans and was Grand Marshall of Albany's Memorial Day Parade in 2001.  She was also very active in establishing the World War II Veterans Memorial and was a member of the Retired Military Nurses Association and the Melvin Roads American Legion Post #1231.

The Honor-A-Veteran ceremony is held every first Monday of the month to honor a deceased veteran of the community.
