Albany County Executive Mike Breslin and the Honor-A-Veteran Committee commemorated World War II veteran Robert Chesnut, Jr. at a ceremony on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, in the Cahill Room of the County Office Building at 112 State St. in Albany.
Chesnut was born in Albany in 1920 and graduated from Rensselaer High School. He joined the United States Army in 1942 and served as an automotive mechanic in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He received a Purple Heart and numerous other medals and decorations.
After the war, Chesnut moved to Altamont in 1950 and served as a parts manager for the former Westfall Chevrolet, Marsh Hallman Chevrolet and Altamont Auto Parts for many years. He was very active in the veterans' community, serving as a lifetime member of the Helderberg American Legion Post 977, a lifetime member, past commander and head of the color guard of the Boyd Hilton VFW Post 7062 and a lifetime member of the Altamont American Legion Post. Chesnut was best known for his dedication to improving the Boyd Hilton VFW Post, where he spent countless hours remodeling the Post building. He also served as a Little League coach and was a longtime member of the Helderberg Rod and Gun Club.
