Ravena Coeymans Selkirk High School Recyclable Boat Regatta

On Saturday, June 2, the Ravena Coeymans Selkirk High School had its 7th Annual Recyclable Boat Regatta at Lawson Lake. Students enrolled in the high school's Design and Drawing for Production (DDP) class, taught by Ms. Shelly Bevan, competed with their creations.

The day started off with volunteers (i.e., parents and family members) bringing the boats designed and constructed of recyclable materials to Lawson Lake.

There was a field of 18 boats powered by student muscle. The boats were designed and created by the students out of recyclable materials. Students used oars or swam behind the boats pushing them along... or both! The race started with all of the boats afloat by the shore. Students had to propel their boats to a point nearly two-thirds of the way across the lake where Mr. & Mrs. Mike Kerrigan sat in their canoe. Students were to navigate around the canoe and return to shore. The members of the team then had to drag their boats completely onshore to finish. The windy weather provided a more difficult race this year, creating a current that the students had to overcome. Some couldn't complete the course.

The winning team of Grace Engel, Lauren Fennell, Diya Mathi and Claire Pike was the only all-female team.

Following the race, there was a barbecue, and time for all to recuperate, relax and enjoy the beautiful park. The RCS high school's technology department uses the regatta to make technology and design more real to the students by having them actually plan and build the boats rather than doing textbook work all year. The design, building and floatability of the boat is used as part of the fourth quarter grade for the students in the DDP class.
