Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Applications for SNAP Benefits may be obtained from the Department of Social Services by calling us at (518) 447-2551, coming to our office at 162 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY, or by visiting the NYS myBenefits website at

The myBenefits website explains the SNAP Program and allows you to see if you may be eligible for assistance by answering a few questions. It will also let you know if you or any of your household members may be eligible for certain other assistance programs based on the answers you provided.

An application for SNAP can be printed from the myBenefits website and submitted to the Albany County Department of Social Services in person, by fax (518) 447-7004 or by mail to 162 Washington Avenue, Fifth Floor, Albany, NY 12210

An interview is required but this can be done over the phone (please write a phone number on your application where you can be reached during the day) or you may have a face to face interview if you choose.

As part of the eligibility process we will need you to provide us proof of the following:

  • Identification/Citizenship or Alien Status (if questionable)
  • Income for all household members who live and eat with you (This includes income from wages, and  unearned income sources such as unemployment benefits, child support, social security benefits, etc.)
  • Address and shelter expenses (Proof of how much rent/mortgage you pay, property and school taxes, home owners insurance, etc.)
  • Heating Costs (Proof of what type of fuel you use to heat your home)
  • Student Status ( Required for students age 16 and older)
  • Dependent Care Expenses (Proof of how much you pay for day care)   

You may provide the above information with your application. If you do provide the information, the interview may take less time. It is possible that we may need to request additional information depending on how you answer the questions during the interview and your individual circumstances. If you did not submit the documentation with your application, we will send you a request for the needed documentation after we conduct the interview.
